FAQ
1. How big is Canada really, and how long does it take to travel between cities?
Ridiculously big.
Cross-country distances are deceptive:
- Toronto → Vancouver: 5-hour flight
- Banff → Vancouver: 10–12 hours by car
- Montreal → Toronto: 5–6 hours by bus/train
Don’t attempt to “see it all” in one trip — pick a region.
2. Can I see wildlife up close? Is it safe?
You will see wildlife — especially in the Rockies.
Rules:
- Never approach bears, elk, moose (they look friendly… they aren’t).
- Keep food locked away in campsites.
- Stay on marked trails.
Cute photos aren’t worth getting chased.
3. How cold does Canada actually get?
Depends on where you are:
- Toronto/Montreal: –10° to –25°C in winter
- Calgary/Banff: –15° to –35°C
- Vancouver: mild, rainy, rarely below 0°C
Pack layers, thermal socks, and a jacket that doesn’t give up on you.
4. What’s the cheapest way to get around?
- Buses: Best for budget (Megabus, Red Arrow, Rider Express)
- Domestic flights: Good for long distances when booked early
- Car rentals: Ideal for Banff/Jasper/BC coast
Public transport in cities is great, but between provinces? Expect long hauls.
5. Do I need cash or do Canadians use cards for everything?
Canada is extremely card-friendly.
Tap payments, Apple Pay, Google Pay — all common.
Still bring a small amount of cash for:
- farmers’ markets,
- national park kiosks,
- small rural cafés.
6. How bad are mosquitoes, really?
In some places? Brutal.
Summer in Ontario, Manitoba, and a lot of wilderness areas means mosquitoes and blackflies.
Bring repellent, long sleeves for evenings, and a sense of humour.
