FAQ

1. Where should I base myself — Lisbon or Porto?

Both are amazing but for different moods:

  • Lisbon: nightlife, rooftop bars, beach day-trips, digital-nomad energy.
  • Porto: cheaper, more laid-back, stunning riverfront, great wine culture.

Many travellers do 3–4 days in each.

2. Is Portugal good for surfing beginners?

Yes — it’s one of Europe’s top surf destinations.

  • Beginners: Cascais, Arrifana, Peniche (summer is gentler).
  • Experienced: Ericeira & Nazaré (winter waves are insane).

Surf camps are super popular for meeting people.

3. Are trams and tuk-tuks tourist traps?
  • Lisbon Tram 28: iconic but extremely busy — go early morning or late evening.
  • Tuk-tuks: fun but overpriced in tourist zones; always negotiate or check the meter.

Public transport is cheap and easy to use.

4. Can you drink in public?
Officially: depends on the city.
Lisbon and Porto allow it in most places as long as you’re not causing chaos.
Beach drinking is common but keep it respectful — police mainly care about noise and glass.
5. How much cash do I need?

Portugal is very card-friendly, even in small cafés.
Cash is useful for:

  • some beach bars,
  • small bakeries,
  • local markets.

But overall, tap-to-pay is king.

6. What should I know about day trips like Sintra or Lagos?
  • Sintra: arrives early; queues get wild. Book palace tickets in advance.
  • Lagos: buses and trains are easy, but summer crowds fill beaches fast.
  • Algarve in general: rent a car if you want to reach the best hidden beaches.
